July Dry -Eye Awareness: A wellness Tool! Not a medicine!

This July- dry eye awareness month we would like to introduce BLINKBUDDY.

A unique blink reminder app for laptops and Android phones.

It is  not a medical treatment

We received this from Sahana, Ophthalmologist. We know Sahana since her childhood, from our Pune days. Interestingly we were thinking of her as I went through a procedure for 'Posterior Capsular Opacification". I did struggle with dry eyes!

The APP is easy to install. It is free. I installed it in both my android phone and on my laptop. It gives us periodical messages. I believe it is a very useful  App. Good for all those who spend a lot of time on either phones and Laptops. We do forget and this is a welcome innovation which Sahana has developed!

🔔 Gentle reminders to blink and rest your eyes

🧘 Posture check alerts to prevent strain

⏱️ Built-in Pomodoro timer with customizable work/break cyclesd

We feel proud to introduce Sahana! I am sure so would be, her alma mater Sankara Netralaya!

"I trained in Sankara Nethralaya Chennai , in practice in Mumbai for the last 25 yrs.

I run a Dry Eye Clinic and have seen a rapid increase in patients with Dry Eyes especially after the pandemic.
This includes children and young adults.
Dry eyes is due to a number of causes but that due to excessive screen time is because of staring at our screens and not blinking.

Digital eye wellness is important. Reducing screen time is essential, but while using the screens a few rules to be followed are
20-20-20 rule , keeping the height of computer at or just below eye level, adjusting light intensity and blinking.
Studies have shown that Blinking should be 15-20 times a minute which reduces to 4-6 times while on the screen.

Blinkbuddy App is a blink reminder App , not a treatment but a simple reminder to blink.
The gentle blinking icon reminds one to blink due to unconscious mimicry and helps reduce eye strain

The science behind it -

When someone yawns , you yawn

Similarly - “If You Blink, I Blink” is because of a fascinating neurobiological phenomenon called behavioral synchronization or unconscious mimicry using the ‘Mirror Neuron Reflex’

It is recommended to blink 15-20 times a minute which reduces to 4-6 times a minute while on the computer. Reduced blinking rate causes eye strain and fatigue.
